General Rules for Computer Usage and Full Access to the Internet
Computers at the Dexter District Library provide full access to the Internet
In October, 2000, Public Act 212 took effect in the State of Michigan. This law required the Dexter District Library to implement a system or method to prevent children 17 years old and younger from accessing obscene material and material that is sexually explicit and harmful to minors available on the Internet.
The Board of Trustees has set the following policies for use of the Unfiltered Internet Access Stations:
- Users must be 18 years old or older to use computer machines at the Dexter District Library.
- Children 17 years old and younger may use computer machines, providing a parent or legal guardian is seated next to the child at all times during their Internet session.
- Patrons wishing to use the computer must show identification verifying their age at the circulation desk prior to starting an Internet session.
- All rules regarding the care and use of the Library’s computer resources apply to this machine.
The Library provides an Internet access terminal with a filtering software program designed to block out obscene material. Children and patrons of all ages may opt to use the filtered Internet access terminal. Please see the circulation staff for further details.
If you have questions or concerns regarding this policy, please contact Library Director Paul McCann, , or 734-426-4477.
