Fire Department Helps Clear Land For New Library
The Dexter Area Fire Department helped the Library clear part of the Alpine Street site for the new Library when fire fighters held a training session on Saturday, November 18, 2006. The Dexter Area Fire Department, in conjunction with the Chelsea Area Fire Authority and the Putnam Township Fire Department, used one of the structures on the Library’s property to help local fire fighters prepare for real emergencies. Under the direction of fire fighting instructors from Michigan State University, local fire fighters were able to learn techniques to manage live fires under controlled conditions. The Library was pleased to be able to offer this training opportunity to The Dexter Fire Fighters.
On December 11, 2006, the Library received final site plan approval from the Dexter Village Council. This approval was a major milestone in the process towards the new building. The Village’s engineering firms reviewed the Library’s site and building design plans for compliance with local codes and ordinances. Receiving final site plan approval from the Village Council now allows the Library to complete the constructions drawings, which will be the basis for contractor bids.
Subsequent to the final site plan approval, the Library was required to make a few minor changes to the site plan. The Library’s engineers have completed the necessary additional details to the drawings and hope to have approval to solicit bids from site work engineers by the beginning of April.
The Library will pursue a two-pronged strategy to the construction project by splitting the site work and excavation into one bid package and the construction into a separate bid package.
The Library’s construction management firm, O’Neal Construction of Ann Arbor, anticipates the site work bidding to take place in April, with site work to begin in early May. The initial phase will consist of site grading, tree removal, excavating the area for the foundation and installation of an underground water detention system.
The detailed construction drawings will be finished over the course of March and April, with bidding and the award of the construction contracts to be in May.
Barring any unforeseen conditions or difficulties securing the necessary building permits, the Library hopes to begin the physical construction of the new building by the end of June.
An official groundbreaking ceremony will be scheduled and that date will be announced through the Dexter Leader, Ann Arbor News, on the Library’s web site at www.dexter.lib.mi.us and through fliers in the Library.
