Construction on New Library Makes Great Strides

The winter weather has passed and the sunny days have allowed the construction of the new Library to pick up steam and continue to roll forward.

Major progress has been made with the central structure of the building. During the months of March and April, crews were able to pour the concrete for the lower level and first floor slabs. This step tied the core foundation of the building together and allowed workers to backfill around the foundation. A drive by Alpine Street will reveal the large mounds of dirt are gone, affording community members a better view of the site.

With the ability to backfill around the core of the building, work crews were able to begin work on the shallow foundations for the main floor. Certain parts of the Alpine Street level will be a slab on grade foundation. Additional steel framing will be installed in June.

Work on the lower level has proceeded at a great pace. The infrastructure for the mechanical and electrical systems has been installed with many connecting conduits running through the concrete slabs. Several key components of the heating and cooling system, including the main HVAC air handling unit, have been delivered and situated in the lower level mechanical room.

Also in the lower level, a significant amount of interior framing has been completed. Hallways, the meeting room space, the Friends of the Library area, office and bathroom spaces are now clearly taking shape as distinct spaces.

In the coming weeks, additional foundations will be poured, the masons will continue the installation of load bearing masonry on the first floor, the remainder of the structural steel will be installed and rough-in work for the mechanical, electrical and plumbing will continue. While this corner of the Village is not the most accessible these days (with the Mill Creek bridge under construction) the Library encourages everyone to swing by and observe the progress.

Our construction managers at O’Neal Construction are still confident the new Library will open in late fall of 2008 and progress at the site will be more visible every day!
