Huron Valley Community Network
Board of Directors Meeting

January 5, 1997

Board Members Present: Arnold Barr (Chair), Ed Hayes (Treasurer), Keith Stanger (Secretary), Mary Udoji

The meeting was held at the Washtenaw County Library and was called to order at 2:22 p.m. by Mr. Barr, who distributed an agenda. The Board waived notice of time, place and subject of the meeting.

The minutes of the meeting of December 15, 1996 were approved.

The HVCN financial report for the period ending December 31, 1996, posted by e-mail by the Treasurer, were approved by the Board.

Mr. Barr and Mr. Hayes met to discuss a fundraising brochure. Mr. Hayes suggested the brochure should be no more than two pages, with the first page focusing on HVCN’s vision and community benefits and the second page providing a business plan. At their meeting, Mr. Hayes gave Mr. Barr a draft of an HVCN vision statement. Mr. Barr reported he was working on the business plan and that he wanted to get information on the cost of a Sun Sparc-based system. The brochure would be sent to organizations and individuals, with a cover letter customized to the concerns and needs of the recipient. Mr. Barr noted that Karen Cline had volunteered to enter information into an HVCN fundraising database.

Mr. Barr reported that the HVCN web site served up about 7 megabytes of data per day during the month of October 1996 and about 1 1/2 Megabytes per day during November 1996. The sharp decline was accounted for by the shift of the Ann Arbor District Library’s web site from the HVCN server to their own server.

Mr. Barr reported that the Ann Arbor chapter of a nonprofit organization supporting the enhancement of barber shop quartets would be setting up their web site on the HVCN server.

Mr. Hayes said he agreed with other members of the HVCN Board that the number of people serving on the Board needed to be increased. He observed that ideally, new Board members would not only have a clear vision of HVCN’s role in the community, but would also have a high profile in the community, bringing more credibility and social connections to the HVCN endeavor.

Mr. Barr reported that Julie Griess contacted him via e-mail and indicated that Judith Walter, the elected clerk of Pittsfield Township, wanted to put some Township documents on the World Wide Web. A meeting was scheduled for January 8, 1997 at 7:30 p.m. in the Washtenaw County Library with Ms. Walter and Doug Woolley, the Pittsfield Township Supervisor, to provide an introduction to and demonstration of HVCN.

The next Board meeting was not scheduled.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Keith Stanger, Secretary
